Every now and again, a controversial World Alphabet Olympics is held by South Korea to celebrate its writing system as the World’s best. Whether the “Olympians” are aware of Thaana script is unknown. Certainly, the editors of “The World’s Writing Systems” have the following to say about Thaana script (page 567):

wrsystems

A fair comparison can only be made by those who are familiar with all scripts of the world.

  • Read this document on Thaana chirography, which outlines the historical development of Thaana script and issues with Thaana typography in the context of typesetting within mixed scripts. The article was a paper presented in the Writers’ Conference organized by the National Centre for Linguistic and Historical Research held in Dharubaaruge, Male’ from 19th July to 2oth July 2000. Note that Opentype, first proposed in 1996, was not well known then. The article speaks about Apple GX Typography (now better known as Apple Advanced Typography, AAT) as the solution to the challenges of Thaana script. The title of the paper which appears in the proceedings of the conference is entitled “Gabulhi Thaana: A challenge for information technology.
  • This page outlines why an additional Unicode block is required to properly word process Thaana.

Here are  some Thaana fonts I have designed since 1996 with explanatory notes and free downloads.

ALL Thaana enabled fonts have naviyani because it is a Unicode character. It is not in the keyboard as the keyboard most people normally use is the Typewriter keyboard. And typewriter keyboard does not have naviyani.

      To type naviyani,
      (a) Use the Insert icon from Word Menu Bar then, symbol icon.
      (b) Press “Alt” and type 1969 on the keypad.
      (c) Download Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator (Free) from MSDN and do your own keyboard.

Thank you for your comment 🙂

  2. […] (ޱ). It’s Alt+1969 in Word, but it doesn’t work in browsers. Anyway, thanks to Hassan Hameed for […]
