A grotesque Thaana font for display headings

.

MV Maliku is a new Modern Thaana font. The traditional letters lose their readability in small sizes. The purpose of Maliku is to increase readability at small sizes while maintaining the recognizable features of traditional font faces. When tested for readability, children in Grade 3 are able to read documents written in MV Maliku.

The modern style of Thaana writing was introduced in the 1950s by Himithee Thuththu — a noted navigation educator and mathematician. The style is also known as Athireege Thaana because some of the dhoani belonging to Athireege had their names written in this style of writing.

For efficiency of writing, several improvements are possible but these have not been incorporated in this version. Improvements include reducing descender height by incorporating the bottom diacritical marks above or on the left of the consonant characters.

MV Maliku was designed using Fontlab and Microsoft Volt. It includes Opentype features.
